Finding Treasure Within: A Review of The Alchemist
I’m not entirely sure how Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist landed on my to-be-read stack, but I suspect it came from a “must-read” list by a personal development influencer. For years, I used to comb through those lists to help my personal growth, and it’s a strategy I’d still recommend to anyone starting that journey.
Because of how I found it, I had filed the book in the “self-help” section of my brain and was surprised to discover it was actually a parable, written as a timeless fable. Regardless of my misconceptions, I found the book to be a delightful and deeply self-affirming read.
The Shepherd’s Dream
The story follows Santiago, a young Spanish shepherd who loves the freedom of his life but is on the verge of settling down. His world is turned upside down by a recurring dream about a treasure hidden at the Egyptian pyramids. This dream sparks a deep restlessness. On his way to meet a woman he fancies, he encounters Melchizedek, the King of Salem, who introduces him to the idea of a “Personal Legend“—one’s true purpose in life. This conversation spurs Santiago into action, and he sells his flock to travel across the sea to a new land.
Trials in a New Land
Santiago’s journey begins in Tangier, where his naïveté gets him robbed of all his money. Demoralized and shaken, he is ready to give up. He finds work with a crystal merchant and learns of the merchant’s own unfulfilled Personal Legend of visiting Mecca. Inspired by the merchant’s story and his own success in reviving the shop, Santiago’s drive is restored, and he continues his quest.
Lessons from the Desert
Santiago joins a caravan crossing the Sahara, where he meets an Englishman obsessed with alchemy and learns about omens and the “Language of the World.” When tribal wars strand the caravan at a beautiful oasis, Santiago meets Fatima, a desert woman with whom he falls in love. Their bond presents him with a powerful choice: stay in the comfort of love or continue his journey.
It is here that he finally encounters the titular Alchemist, a mysterious and powerful figure who teaches him that true alchemy is about spiritual transformation, not just turning lead into gold. The Alchemist guides Santiago, helping him realize that true courage lies in listening to one’s heart and pursuing destiny, no matter the cost.
The True Treasure
After facing trials that test his faith and courage—including symbolically transforming himself into the wind—Santiago finally reaches the pyramids. It is there, at his destination, that he learns the ultimate lesson: the treasure was not in Egypt, but back in Spain, at the very spot where his journey began.
The long and difficult quest was not in vain. By following his dream, Santiago discovered love, wisdom, and a deep connection to the world. That journey, and the man he became because of it, was his Personal Legend.
Why It Resonates
The Alchemist is a powerful story about chasing dreams, interpreting life’s signs, and finding value not just at the destination but within the journey itself. It served as a profound reminder that the path we’re on, with all its struggles and discoveries, is what shapes us. For anyone feeling doubt about their own “Personal Legend,” this book is a beautiful and inspiring affirmation to keep going.
